Frequently Asked Questions About Deionized Water Systems
How Does a Deionized Water System Work?
A deionized water system works by removing ions, minerals and other impurities from the water. The process involves passing the water through one or more ion exchange resin beds that contain positively and negatively charged resins. The positively charged resins attract negatively charged ions, such as chloride, while the negatively charged resins attract positively charged ions, such as sodium. As the water passes through the resin beds, the ions are exchanged with hydrogen and hydroxyl ions, resulting in deionized water.
What Type of Pipe is Used for Deionized Water Systems?
Deionized water is highly corrosive and can leach metals from pipes and fittings, leading to contamination. Therefore, it is recommended to use high-purity plastic materials such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) for transporting deionized water. These materials are resistant to corrosion and do not react with the water, ensuring that the water remains pure.
Is Deionized Water the Same as Reverse Osmosis?
Deionized water and reverse osmosis (RO) water are not the same. Deionized water is produced by removing ions from the water using ion exchange resins. In contrast, RO water is produced by forcing water through a semipermeable membrane designed to filter out impurities, including ions, minerals, and other contaminants. While both deionized water and RO water are considered pure, a water deionizer system is better suited for applications that require low-conductivity water, while RO water is better suited for applications that require the removal of both dissolved and suspended solids.
